Research at Schenker Deutschland AG focuses on pre-development phases as well as on product and process development. We use applied research and experimental development to test new technologies to determine whether they can be used in processes and logistics products and can then be transferred to specific, marketable processes and products. DB Schenker's research agenda is based on the Sustainability City and the strategic directions of Schenker Deutschland AG.

Tracing Intelligent Logistics Objects (TiLO)

June 2010 to May 2015

Tracing Intelligent Logistics Objects (TiLO) has set out to optimize paths in the cross-docking warehouse; optimize the use of forklifts, pallet jacks and related equipment; minimize search times; and make logistics processes more efficient, to name just a few goals. The means to an end is the development of a new camera and sensor-based analysis system that tracks the movements of industrial trucks, pallets and packages in the warehouse. A state-of-the-art image processing solution makes it possible to precisely identify industrial trucks moving in the cross-docking facility as well as the goods they are transporting and thus analyze all warehouse movements in concert. The recorded data also makes it possible to determine whether goods distribution in the warehouse makes economic sense and to identify where there is room to improve.

Integrated Air Cargo Hub (IACH)

June 2010 to September 2013

The project group develops standardizations and planning, controlling and information methods for an end-to-end and advance flow of information in the integrated airport system. Seamless coordination along the entire air freight transportation chain helps accelerate processes and increases the availability of space at airports since a shipment that is cross-docked immediately doesn't take up storage space.

The project is being carried out at Frankfurt Airport, where Schenker is a proven leader when it comes to managing air freight processes. Schenker Deutschland AG is familiar with the processes, has years of practical experience and hopes to create the foundation for a neutral information platform that ensures an optimized horizontal and vertical flow of information among all parties involved.

Transformation Ability through Modular Production Systems (WamoPro)

September 2010 to August 2013

Every company is constantly confronted with change, whether due to evolving customer or market requirements, product innovations or a crisis and the associated drop in orders and revenues. The WamoPro research project set out to design the optimization process that is triggered by change quickly and economically for companies. The project analyzes the existing production systems of participating companies in their entirety (such as a production line, a location, a department, etc.), divides them into technology, organization and HR modules, and then develops production systems capable of transformation. Modular production systems are configured and incorporated into the company's overall system, with particular attention being paid to cost versus benefit. In addition, an early warning system for change factors is being developed to detect potential changes early on to enable the company to optimize its response.
