"Fresh Thinking for Better Cars"

For Opel, Schenker Deutschland AG manages, among other things, the supply logistics in the area of Bavaria and Nordhessen (North Hesse). Schenker handles the trouble-free and timely process of materials delivery to the Opel production sites.

In practice
In the week before the actual collection of the consignment, Opel sends "Pick-up Sheets" by EDI. These are a special form of transportation order which show in each case a supplier's requirement for production parts for a particular unloading site and sequence.

These Pick-up Sheets, referred to below as "PUSs", were created by Adam Opel AG in order to optimize the technical processes concerning data and transportation. They contain information about the goods to be collected, the supplier, the unloading point and collection and delivery times.

Optimization of transportation processes and data flow
The PUSs are sent to DB Schenker and the supplier at the same time. For one thing they therefore ensure the production of the required parts by the supplier. For another the logistics service provider can make the best arrangements with the necessary vehicles. The original PUS also acts as a commercial document and replaces the supplier's delivery note.

At DB Schenker the PUSs go through a central server and they are distributed from there to the relevant business locations on the basis of postcodes. At the same time they are transferred centrally into Capricom, DB Schenker's own automobile handling system. On the basis of this information the business locations define the collection routes taking into account the collection times agreed with suppliers.

Acceptance of consignment at the supplier
When consignments are accepted at the supplier, they are inspected as to completeness and condition. A second check is performed at the consolidation point at DB Schenker.

In parallel with this operational event, information is sent ahead of the consignment on the basis of the PUSs to the relevant Opel unloading point using the routes scheduled purely for cars. So the car manufacturer knows even before the goods arrive what is coming to which defined unloading point on which lorry.

On delivery Opel issues a goods received number that is stamped on to the PUS. This GR number is digitally transferred to the DB Schenker dispatch business location and "married" with the PUS data in Capricom. The invoice to Opel is generated on the basis of this data record.
