The Finnland Connection

On track for new business in the Far North. Economic logistics concept opens new market.

For many years Europe's largest manufacturer of cable reels, August Hildebrandt GmbH, has let Schenker Deutschland AG handle its transport logistics. Now the Schwerin-based family company has received an additional order to produce steel cable reels for the client Prysmian, which manufactures high-voltage cable in Pikkala, Finland for the growing offshore market.

A key component of this business success – the first order is for 146 cable reels – is the full-service logistics concept of the Güstrow location of Schenker Deutschland AG.

Three bright red steel cable reels with a diameter of 3.5 meters and a weight of 1.5 tons will be loaded on a truck for pre-shipment and onward transport. For the main transport via ferry from Rostock to Helsinki DB Schenker developed together with the ferry company a variation that saves both space and money by placing four reels on a mafi trailer. This made it possible to save every fourth transport compared with going overland. It is common in the industry to deliver the reels disassembled. If that were the case this time, assembly workers would have had to travel to Finland, which would have generated more costs in terms of time and money. "It is thanks to DB Schenker that we are now in the Finnish market with the assembled versions," said  Wolfgang Zühle, head of logistics at August Hildebrandt. Both business partners are already thinking about other projects via the Baltic Sea.
